Active winterising

How do I know if active winterising is right for me?
  • Would you like to enjoy crystal clear, healthy water all year round?

  • Would you like to enjoy a breathtaking view of your pool in both summer and winter?

  • Would you like to make it easier to open your pool for the next season?

If your problem does not correspond to these symptoms, it is possible that your pool is experiencing a similar problem.

In the last couple of years, winter pool maintenance has changed significantly.
Owners now have a choice between two proven methods: passive winterisation and active winterisation. Active winterisation is becoming increasingly popular because it offers numerous advantages for the filtration system and water quality.

Thanks to active winterising, your pool remains in perfect condition, even during the cold season. The filtration system continues to operate, but with reduced running times. This method is particularly suitable for regions with mild winters and greatly simplifies the process of getting your pool back up and running in spring.

What are the stages of active winterising?

  1. 1

Water temperature between 20°C and 15°C

It's autumn, swimming season is over. This is phase 1 of your winterisation routine.

  2. 2

    Clean your pool thoroughly

(walls, water line, skimmer baskets, pre-filter) while leaving the filtration system running. > Bordnet

  3. 3

Maintain the pH level of the water

between 7,0 and 7,4 > pH MinuspH Plus

  4. 4

    Maintain the disinfectant concentration

through automatic treatment or by adding a 250 g chlorine tablets. > Chlorilong® CLASSIC

  5. 5

    Add the winterising product

to start preventing limescale deposits and algae growth right away with Puripool® Super.

  6. 6

    Water temperature below 15°C

Winter has arrived. It's time for phase 2 of your winter routine.

  7. 7

    Deep clean your filter

Then the next day (at least 12 hours later), backwash the filter and rinse it. Remember to change your filter media if necessary. > Decalcit Filter

  8. 8

    Perform shock treatment

Perform shock chlorination with your regularly used disinfectant to neutralise all microorganisms and particles present in the water and eradicate all impurities.

Our shock treatment products:  Chloryte® (unstabilised chlorine), Chlorifix® or Chloriklar® (stabilised chlorine) for chlorine-treated swimming pools.

  9. 9

Add a second dose of winterising product

Complete the treatment by adding a second dose of winterising product. Puripool® Super guarantees complete protection of the water and equipment until your pool reopens.

  10. 10

Filter for 4 hours per day

at least, and preferably at times when the risk of freezing is greatest. During periods of freezing, leave the filtration system running 24 hours a day to prevent ice from forming in the pool's hydraulic system.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

  • With active winterisation, the pool's filtration system remains in operation even during winter, but in reduced mode. Unlike passive winterisation, the pool is not completely shut down: it continues to operate in a limited manner.

The main characteristics of active wintering :

    • The filtration system continues to run every day for several hours
    • The water is not drained: it remains in the basin
    • The pump ensures constant water movement

The use of a specific winterising product, such as Puripool® Super, is recommended.

The major advantage of this method is that restarting in spring is much simpler. The water remains clear and the risk of frost damage to the filtration system is reduced.

Active winterising is particularly suitable for :

    • Swimming pools equipped with variable speed pumps or filters with programmers
    • Regions with mild winters
    • Pools that require maintenance all year round
    • Swimming pools that need to be ready for use quickly in spring
  • Active winterising of your pool begins with a thorough cleaning of the pool. Start by removing all impurities and checking the water quality. The pH level must be within the ideal range of 7.0 to 7.4, as this is the basis for all following maintenance steps.

The filtration system plays a central role in active winterisation. The system should run for at least four hours every day throughout the winter, preferably early in the morning when the risk of frost is highest. The pump ensures continuous water circulation, which prevents ice formation and guarantees consistent water quality.

Controlling the water temperature is particularly important.
As soon as it drops below 15°C, it is the ideal time to add specific winterising products. These protect the water against algae formation and limescale deposits during the cold season. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions based on the volume of your pool.

For the following season, it is essential to check the filtration system regularly and backwash it if necessary. This prevents clogging and ensures optimal filtration throughout the winter period. Also check the water level regularly, as too low a level can disrupt circulation.

Active winterisation certainly requires regular monitoring of water parameters and the filtration system, but it has the major advantage of significantly reducing the effort required when restarting the system in spring.

  • Using a high-quality winterising product, such as Puripool® Super, is essential for successfully winterising your pool. This product effectively protects the pool from typical winter problems and preserves the walls and surfaces from limescale deposits. Its preventive action against the proliferation of micro-organisms is particularly important, especially when temperatures rise in spring.

Puripool® Super is suitable for both passive and active winterising and remains stable in chlorinated pools, ensuring optimal effectiveness. Another major advantage is that you can continue to swim even after adding the product.

Using a winterising product makes spring cleaning much easier, as it limits dirt and deposits during the cold season. This saves you time when restarting your pool and provides long-lasting protection for your equipment against damage caused by stains and incrustations.

  • Yes, it is entirely possible to leave the water in the pool during winter and opt for active winterisation. With this method, the filtration system remains in operation (at least 4 hours per day) and the water continues to be treated. This approach is particularly recommended in regions with mild winters.

With a suitable winterising product such as Puripool® Super and regular monitoring of water parameters, you can effectively protect both the water and your equipment. What's more, this method makes it much easier to get your pool back up and running in the spring.
